So, we tried out Twitter Blue...

Everyone is talking about it but…

What is Twitter Blue?

Twitter Blue is an opt-in, paid monthly subscription that adds a blue checkmark to your account and offers early access to select new features, like Edit Tweet.

Where is Twitter Blue available for purchase?

The new Twitter Blue is currently available for in-app purchase on iOS only in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, with plans to expand.

How much does the new Twitter Blue cost?

Twitter Blue subscriptions are paid on a monthly basis, and priced regionally based on the current US price of $7.99/month. If Twitter Blue is available for purchase for you, you’ll find the regional currency price information in-app on iOS.

Navigate to your Profile menu on the Twitter for iOS app.

Select Twitter Blue.

The subscribe button displays the price per month.

Long story short, pretty much any Twitter user (except new accounts) can have that sought-after blue tick with a few added extras.

There’s been a lot of negative discussion surrounding Twitter Blue, such as pointing out that it takes away the point of being verified and could potentially mess up DM’s and messaging with everyone being verified. Turns out Twitter were one step ahead of this and has an extra verification for selected pre-verified users.

Anyway, we bit the bullet and used Honest’s Founder Lauren’s personal Twitter account to purchase Twitter Blue and see if it was worth the money.

So, here’s what happens when you purchase Twitter Blue.

You are shown all the benefits (which most are not available); a key one is “see half the ads” bare this in mind when thinking of using paid ads on Twitter. Following this, you click “subscribe” and purchase Twitter Blue like any other in-app upgrade.

You’re greeted with “Welcome to Twitter Blue!” Hurrah! We click next, are encouraged to follow Twitter Blue, and are greeted with another reminder of what’s included.

Once clicking off, we see that we have that all-important… No longer valued blue tick! Although something felt off - instead of feeling pleased with finally seeing the blue tick, it was a massive sense of embarrassment and cringe. Immediately hoping no one would notice that we spent £6.99 for this fake gratification.

Anyway, other than the embarrassing tick - are the other benefits worth it? Let’s write a Tweet and see what happens.

So, these features are fantastic. First, when you click to Tweet, you have the opportunity to “undo” incase there’s a typo or mistake.

Once you do click “send now”, you are notified that you have 30 minutes to make any edits, which worked well.

We’re impressed with these features, and they have been wanted for a LONG time on Twitter.

The other features on offer though…

We suppose that custom navigation is nice, but the ability to update your App Icon and theme seems incredibly naff to us. An attempt to add on as much as possible. Does anyone care what an App Icon looks like?

We genuinely believe if Twitter Blue had the option to switch off the verification badge, it could be an excellent solution for brands/people. Being able to edit Tweets is a huge game changer, but the badge is almost frowned upon, and it feels simply embarrassing.

Lauren has admitted that she won’t want to Tweet until a month has passed and the badge is gone, so people she knows won’t judge her for having it. Also worth noting, if you cancel the subscription - your verified tick stays the rest of the month.

Paying for Twitter Blue as a “regular folk” doesn’t blend you in with public figures and their blue ticks. There will not be a mystery around whether you may have been verified before. They shame you to the public.

Yep… No hiding from the purchase. Any user can click your tick, and if it says "subscribed to Twitter Blue", they know you did not earn the blue badge of honour.

So would we recommend Twitter Blue? For brands? Potentially. For regular users? No.

As predicted, it's already becoming a mockery if you have purchased it. We're going to have to lay low for a month now!
