Celebrity Crisis Management
Generally speaking, celebrity crisis management is the process where a celebrity/public figure are in conjunction with a team of experts (people like us) deal with severely adverse situations. The aim is to get the best possible outcome with their celebrity status intact. A crisis situation falls into two very broad categories – criminal and non-criminal.
When a celebrity engages in criminal activities, the punishment should match the offence. Still, the celebrity is advised to put together a high-caliber team of professionals to deal with everything from legal representation to managing public relations. What is often important in these situations is the coordination of the professionals on the team. Martha Stewart is a prime example of how a fantastic PR team can salvage your career when you’re in trouble with the law… We’re really important you know!
For non-criminal activities, such as a contentious divorce or a bad slip up or something comes up from the past, the objective is to protect help the celebrity get though the crises and protect his or her brand. According to Lauren, our co-founder here at Honest London, “There are a wide array of approaches to protect or quickly rebuild a celebrity brand when they experience troubles in their personal lives which unfortunately end up getting played out in the media hurting relationships with their fans.”
In all celebrity crisis situations, it is essential to understand the issues and the potential consequences, as well as think through the professionals and resources that are needed to most effectively deal with the situation.
“Honest London’s involvement in a celebrity crisis management situation is often to help evaluate the situation, often ongoing, and to bring the best solutions to the table.
We carry out extensive research to find where the real anger/problem is, we plan and hear what the fans want through many platforms…
(You can’t go by one platform to have a strong idea of the problem… It simply wouldn’t be accurate. Twitter is usually angry at everything while Reddit is more calm, conversational and essentially grown up - you need to read forums, all social platforms to find the true deep-rooted problem)
… and come up with a realistic solution to help achieve the goals of the celebrity and save their reputation” says Founder, Lauren.
The negative impact of most non-criminal celebrity crises is that they badly tarnish the reputations of accomplished athletes and entertainers/celebrities. However, this can be minimised and the brands of these celebrities can usually be repaired with a good team. “While Honest London certainly isn’t your traditional service a celebrity would typically choose, we are very attuned to helping our celebrity clients when they have trouble and working with them and their other advisors to rebuild their brands using proven processes,” says Lauren.
There will always be celebrity crisis management needed, it’s our job to limit these but celebrities are people and the internet is incredibly unpredictable. Therefore, there will always be experts to help successful athletes and entertainers manage these situations.
