What influencers and celebrities shouldn't be posting in a lockdown

Influencers Lockdown Covid

England will be in a four-week national lockdown from Thursday 4th of November until the 2nd of December.

It is an incredibly difficult time for many people in England and the UK for many reasons. To name a few:

  • Job at risk/Job loss

  • Money stress, furlough scheme extended - many dependent on making 80% of wages work

  • Fear of loved ones catching Covid- 19

  • Mental health

Although no matter your situation, lockdown can be damaging to anyone's mental health but this doesn't mean everyone should be highlighting their concerns via social media if they want to keep their account in the green.

Many who are struggling with job and money stress will be looking at social media as an escape from reality more than usual. Most of us either working from home, furloughed or unfortunately out of work will have more time to be scrolling down Instagram.

We have noticed many influencers posting their personal worries about this lockdown and how they're not sure how to cope with it. Some expressing how they want to survive this lockdown by stating that “together, we can get through this”. Unfortunately many seem to be stuck within their bubble and encouraging lockdown activities like online shopping or home decor updates to their following who are most likely budgeting or currently out of work.

We understand lockdown is tough on everyone; it's just not savvy if you want to continue to have a positively engaged following to share your personal concerns when many, many of your audience are unfortunately in a hell of a lot worse position than yourself.

There’s always someone worse off than you but when you're labelled an influencer, you just have to accept that your following look up to your lifestyle day to day as their personal goals. When a lockdown happens... An influencer sharing that they are nervous can seem ridiculous when all you show online is a perfect life.

We work with influencers and celebrities every day and understand it isn't always sunshine and rainbows when the cameras are off but bear in mind the majority of your audience won't understand this.

There have been many influencers continuing to show off their wealth after the announcement was made by showing their new cars, clothing purchases and other expensive unessential items to their audience. A real kick in the teeth for those who are working with so little right now, put yourself in your audience's shoes and ask yourself would you want to see this content right now… (No, is the answer).

It's cringe-worthy how tone-deaf many influencers are being through this.

Some even posting they’re on holiday which is understandably hugely frowned upon right now or that they've set up for Christmas and how excited they are for it without considering how much stress families are under this year.

Influencers need to stop pressuring their audience to 'swipe up' to purchase something so they can enjoy the 5% commission, stop releasing merchandise for now and flashing their latest purchases. It's crucial to have your audience see you as a happy escape, not a place of creating a bitter feeling and disconnect.

Influencers are supposed to be seen as someone who could be your best friend, there’s nothing nice or friendly about rubbing salt in the wound to those who provide you this privileged lifestyle.

What should influencers and celebrities be posting?

Keep it positive without showing your wealth, success and ease of life as of now. You're entitled to have money but be smart when you show it off, now is not the time.

Use this time to remember you have a large platform and can use it for good.
